Our Values & Principles
We make sure that every watch at Polus is serviced with quality and care according to highest standards while honoring the craft of watchmaking.
We do our best to provide trust and transparency for our customers in all matters considering watches we have dealt with.
The watches we sell at our shop are all at minimum checked in timing and water resistance machines and every watch is checked for authenticity, and we always make sure watches work as they should. Majority of the watches we sell are serviced by us at our atelier to make sure everything works as should. We offer individual information about each watch in the description when you have bought a watch from us or a watch service covering letter.
The watch case is designed to protect the movement inside. Please do not use your watch in water or liquids if it is less than 100m/10bar water resistant, and regularly tested for water resistance (WR). Less than 100m/10bar is considered splash or dust proof. If you plan to go for a swim with your watch, make sure the watch is at least 100m/10bar WR. Professional diving watches are always at least 200m/20bar water resistant, and the watch should be tested regularly for WR as the gaskets do age and do wear out by the time. No watch should be taken into sauna or steam rooms. We do not recommend using watches in water unless a watch is specially made and bought for these purposes. There is always a risk of liquids entering the case and damaging the watch.
Some watch cases are more water resistant than others. The water resistance value is often engraved in the case back or the dial of your watch. Your watch may still not be water resistant if the gaskets are in a bad shape or the case or crown are damaged, so the watch should be tested before using it near any liquids.
Please make sure not to operate any pushers or crown under water even if your watch is water resistant, and always keep screw-down-crown locked against the case. The push-in crown should be always resting against the watch case (except when you operate the watch via crown). Push the crown against the case after setting the time if your watch has a push-in-crown. Watch is not water/humidity resistant when the crown isn't against the case.
If you see moisture or water inside the case, please bring your watch quickly to service for us or your local watchmaker. Water inside the case will damage your watch movement, dial and hands.
We recommend servicing your mechanical watch every 5 years. We recommend cleaning your watch when the case and/or bracelet gets dirty, and we will do it safely for your watch.
If your watch is in contact with liquids, the water resistance should be checked at least once a year to make sure no water/humidity enters the case.
We advise not to use much force when operating a watch via crown if something does not work.
We are here to help if your watch is broken or not functioning as it should.

* Possible refurbishment of the watch case (meaning usually polishing and brushing), is always done honoring the originality of the watch. Some watch cases are better left to original condition. We always ask our customers separately acceptance for the refurbishing and advise if it is not recommended.
Quartz watches need service too. The service intervals are usually longer than in mechanical watches. If your quartz watch starts to lose or gain time, or battery dies in less than two years, the watch may need a service. We can service your quartz watch. Just drop it off to our boutique and we will provide you an service estimate.
After accepting our service estimate, we will order needed parts for your watch if we don't have them in stock. Service time is depending on spare part deliveries. Our service time for a mechanical watch is usually between 4-8 weeks, depeding on a watch and its condition. We do always our best to get your watch back to your wrist as soon as possible.
The time needed for your watch service is predicted in our individual service estimate.
If your watch is running well, but you just want the case and metal bracelet professionally cleaned up, please bring it to us and we'll let you know the cost of cleaning and washing the case and a metal bracelet. It is good to clean your watch every now and then.
Take a look at the case and bracelet, and bring your watch to us for cleaning if there is a need for it. We do not recommend washing your watch yourself, as there is always a risk of liquids entering the watch case and damaging the movement. If you remove dirt from your watch yourself, we recommend using a pointed and soft wooden stick carefully for the process (no liquids).
Refurbishment means refinishing of watch case, metal bracelet and clasp. Usually case and bracelet finishings consist of polishing and different types of graining. We are able to make your watch look almost like a new watch if wished. Please bring or send your watch to us and we will give you a estimate of the work.
Automatic, Manual or Quartz?
Quartz watch is powered by a battery, and the movement consist mainly of electronic components and cogs. Just set the time, push or screw the crown in, and you are ready to go until the battery dies. A new battery should keep the watch running around two years. Quartz watches need sometimes service too, but the service interval is usually longer than in mechanical watches.
Some quartz watches have EOL-function (End Of Life) that means the second hand starts to move in 3-5 second intervals when the battery is about to die.
Mechanical wrist watch is powered by a mainspring, which is wound either manually by hand or automatically by a rotor that can be found inside the watch case. We recommend servicing a mechanical watch every 5 years.
Manually winding watch must be wound regularly from the crown to keep it running. The power reserve is a value that tells you how long the watch will run when it is fully wound and not wound afterwards. Usually power reserve is somewhere between 40-50 hours for a mechanical watch, but it can be longer or shorter depending on movement and its design.
User must not wind the watch too much as it can break the mainspring. You will feel a clear stop in your fingers when the watch can't be wound more, and it means the watch is fully wound and the tension of the mainspring is at its strongest. Usually it takes around 15-25 full turns of the crown to get watch fully wound. It is depending on a technical design of the watch and varies thru different makers and models.
Automatic winding watch will wind itself when it gets enough of physical movement. The automatic rotor revolves in the movement and is connected to the barrel that houses the mainspring by gears.
Sometimes an automatic watch doesn't get enough of physical movement to keep the watch running. In this case the you can wind the watch by hand via crown.
The mainspring in a automatic watch is different to a manually wound watch, and "automatic mainspring" will not break when wound by hand. When automatic mainspring reaches its strongest tension it will slide inside a barrel, so that freely moving automatic rotor will not break the mainspring even when the watch is fully wound and is moving around.
